Project Aims

The Open Project aims to provide patients with the opportunity to view a copy of their personal medical records held electronically at the practice.

Key aims include :-
1. To construct an electronic medical record for each patient registered at the practice which facilitates high quality patient care.

2. To choose a clinical system which has the ability to export the medical record for each patient in a format which can be read by any computer without the need for specialised software.

3. To publicise the concept of the availability of the medical record to encourage patients who might wish to view their medical record to apply to do so.

4. To promote awareness of the issues associated with accessing the medical record, particularly the stringent checks required to ensure that the medical record is not released to those authorised by the patient to access their record.

5. To encourage patients to check their personal electronic medical records for factual accuracy.

6. To encourage patients to inform the practice if errors or omissions are found in their personal electronic health record.

7. To evaluate patient satisfaction with the process of encouraging access to the personal electronic medical record.

8. To measure the success of The OPEN Project in terms of
*acceptability of the process
*appropriateness of the strategy
*accessible nature of the O.P.E.N. medical record
*ability to achieve the project's stated aims
